Sunday 27th April – Behold the man (Part 2) – Elder Martin Finegan

Our world often measures greatness by displays of strength — the physical strength of an athlete, the financial strength of a corporation, the political strength of a leader, or the military strength of an army.

Strength, power, and dominance are celebrated and admired. Yet, when we turn to Christian literature and the life of Christ, we encounter a strikingly different perspective.

In one of the most poignant moments of the Gospel, Jesus — bruised from beatings, crowned with thorns, mocked and humiliated — is presented before the jeering crowd. Pilate announces, “Behold the man” (John 19:5). In this moment of apparent weakness, Jesus displays the greatest strength the world has ever known: the strength to endure suffering, to embrace humility, and to demonstrate an unbreakable love for humanity.

While people are often eager to speak boldly about their accomplishments and strengths, the Apostle Paul turns this thinking on its head. In 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, Paul describes how he learned to “delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.” Why? Because it is in his weakness that Christ’s power rests upon him. Paul’s conclusion is simple yet profound: “For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

This morning let us to reconsider our understanding of strength. True strength is not found in dominance, success, or human achievement, but in surrender to God’s grace. It is in our moments of weakness, dependence, and vulnerability that Christ’s power is most clearly seen.
